The states where the most (and least) stressed people live

The states where the fruchtwein (and least) stressed people liveThe states where the fruchtwein (and least) stressed people liveBet you didnt know April was Stress Awareness Month?A 2017 survey of 2,000 American workers found that the majority of workers are stressed on any given workday.Over 70% of respondents ranked their stress at Level 3 or higher (on a scale of 1-5), and mora than 60% said that they felt stressed three or more workdays per week, on average.Clearly, certain industries can produce more stressed out workers than others, but are there certain states that are home to the most stressed out people? Personal finance site WalletHub ranked which states had the most stressed-out people by looking at factors from hours worked per week to personal bankruptcy rate to share of adults getting adequate sleep. So which states have the least and most stressed people? The 10 most-stressed statesLouisianaNew MexicoWest VirginiaMississippiNevadaArkansasOklahomaAlabamaKentuckyTennesseeT he 10 least-stressed statesMinnesotaNorth DakotaUtahIowaSouth DakotaWisconsinColoradoMassachusettsHawaiiNebraskaSource WalletHubThe rankings analyzed four main areas Work-related stress, money-related stress, family-related stress, and health and safety-related stress. No states on the East Coast made the Top 10 on the most-stressed list, so perhaps New Yorkers arent the workaholics we think they are or theyve just figured out how to handle their stress. It seems that the further South you go, the more stress you will experience. However, if you are looking to have little stress in your life, head to Minnesota as this was the least stressed state in the whole country.Perhaps it is all the cows and farmland or that is a booming place for tech jobs. The Twin Cities added 3,300 technology jobs last year and is the 14th-largest tech employment region in the U.S., according to the Computing Technology Industry Association. Colorado and Utah, which also made it into this least stressed pack , have also seen a lot of growth in the tech sector and as a result, low unemployment rates.Somewhat surprisingly, California didnt make the least-stressed list despiteWalletHub recently ranking eight of its cities as the happiest places for people to live in America.Sleepy states fared wellFour of the states that were considered least-stressed (North Dakota, South Dakota, Iowa, and Colorado) also reported the most hours of sleep per night, once again proving that more sleep equals a happier and more productive worker.Other findings from the study includedHawaii has the lowest unemployment rate (2.4%), three times lower than in Alaska (highest at 7.2%)New Hampshire has the lowest share of the population living below the poverty line (8.5%), two-and-a-half times lower than Mississippi (highest at 22.3%)Utah has the lowest separation and divorce rate (16.18%), which is almost two times lower than the District of Columbia (highest at 28.63%)Utah has the lowest share of adults in fair o r poor health, 11.98%, which is two times lower than Arkansas (highest at 24.44%)The District of Columbia has the most psychologists per 100,000 residents (97), which is almost seven times more than Alabama (fewest at 14)

4 lessons from historys great innovators you should never forget

4 lessons from historys great innovators you should never forget4 lessons from historys great innovators you should never forgetI spend a lot of time reading about entrepreneurship and innovation because I admire people who take sensible but daring risks. I want to be more like them.I recently left Google to start a technology company. Ive spent much of my time talking with other founders. And Ive read countless books and articles about the nature of startups. But still, Ive struggled to answer this fundamental question What are the most important lessons from historys innovators?Thankfully, I discovered some thoughtful answers in the work of British author Harold Evans. The words he wrote left an indelible impression on me. And now Im going to share with you some his most important insights.Lesson 1 Make no assumptionsIgnorance that ignites curiosity is a better starting point than half-knowledge.?- ?HaroldEvansEdwin Armstrong exemplified this lesson. He welches constantly trying to do things in radio circuitry he was told by the experts was impossible. He went on to invent FM Radio.Breakthroughs come from the discarding of assumptions.Being first is not always best.John Fitch was the first to operate a steamboat service, not the commonly presumed Robert Fulton. But Fulton learned from Fitchs mistakes and triumphed on a different river at a more propitious time. The same is true with Charles Goodyear, who was late to vulcanize rubber. And Isaac Singer, with his now iconic sewing machine.Inventors learn from failure. Their success comes from understanding failure and acting upon this knowledge. No man is a fool until he stops asking questions.?- ?Charles Proteus Steinmetz, who fostered the development of alternating current that made possible the expansion of the electric powerindustryLesson 2 Its OK to borrowMore innovations come from borrowing and combination than simple invention.Jean Nidetch did not invent the diet she used for Weight Watchers.Nolan Bushnell, who established Atari, did not invent the first home made video game.Leo Baekeland (father of the plastics industry) borrowed from photographic chemistry to invent plastics.Elisha Otis (inventor of a safety device that prevents elevators from falling) built his first elevators using springs he had learned about making carriages.Wilbur Wright figured out how to turn an airplane by thinking about the way he turned a bicycle.I invented nothing new. I simply assembled into a car the discoveries of other men behind whom were centuries of work.?- ?HenryFordLesson 3 Nothing works the first timeToo often impatient entrepreneurs expect instant results. History shows us that there are a hundred setbacks for every change.?- ?HaroldEvansUSA Today, Amazon.com, and CNN struggled initially, but later thrived because their basic ideas were sound.Innovation is often cut too soon because backers fail to appreciate that it takes time to work out the wrinkles.Critics called Raymond Damadian a screaming lunatic for thinking nuclear magnetic resonance might be used for medicine. And yet he created the first MRI scanning machine.Theodore Judah was crazy for advocating a railway line over the High Sierra. But he went on to promote, establish, and konzept the first transcontinental railroad. If youve got an innovative idea, and the majority does not pooh-pooh it, then the odds are you must not have a very good idea. When people thought I was loony, it did not bother me at all. In fact, I considered that I must really be onto something.?- ?Ted Turner (founder ofCNN)Lesson 4 The whole can be greater than the sum of its partsIsolated innovators may produce wonders but they are more likely to succeed in a knowledge network, whether connected by geography or electronics. Connections between innovators are ubiquitous?- ?one good innovation deserves another.?- ?HaroldEvansMany innovators flourish in partnerships. Take the partnership of Wozniak and Jobs at Apple. Or the partnership of Ida and William Rosenthal at Maidenform. Then theres Marc Andreessen and Jim Clark at Netscape. The Wright brothers, and Sergey Brin and Larry Page at Google, the list goes on.Leo Baekeland corresponded with Thomas Edison, the Wright brothers, Henry Ford, the Duponts, and Bell.William Shockley hired Robert Noyce and Gordon Moore, whose circuits were used by Nolan Bushnell at Atari, the first company to hire Steve Jobs. The exploits of the innovators who have come before us can spark the ambitions of the next generation to make new technologies. To leave their own dent in the universe. We should pass down their lessons and their lore.

New Year, New Career Attitude

New Year, New Career AttitudeNew Year, New Career AttitudeEvery job includes some task or responsibility that isnt enjoyable. However, when you feel stuck in a job that is legitimately terrible for you, its hard to keep a positive attitude by focusing on the silver lining. Instead, you watch in horror as your attitude, your energy and possibly your work ethic crumbles under the pressure of working a job that is a poor fit for you. Fortunately, your mind can have power over your circumstances. If you choose to reframe your crummy job as a temporary stepping point as you look for a new job, you can salvage your time, your network and your attitude before you leave. Not only will this platzset you up for a smooth transition out of your current workplace, but it will help you develop the professional skills you need to navigate tough situations in the future. Of course, if youre in a truly toxic or dangerous workplace, you might decide that its not in your best interest to stick it out. However, if youre unhappy but tolerably well treated, unterstellung tips can help you start the New Year off with a new attitude until you can transition outFind one thing to be grateful for every day. In a bad situation, it is easy to let the big problems take up the focus. However, bad things happening dont have to detract from good things happening. The two kinds of events can exist together and often go hand in hand with each other. The only thing that prevents us from seeing the partnership is when we choose to focus only on negative things. For example, you might find yourself at odds with your coworkers, clients and schedule for most of the week. However, the income you receive for putting up with these downsides has allowed you to get out of debt several years earlier than you would have working somewhere else. Instead of feeling taken advantage of, you can choose to appreciate the fact that now that youre out of debt you truly can work anywhere you want. This job as bad an experience as it might have been helped you earn your freedom. Take time every day to reframe your terrible experience with one positive thing. Showing gratitude every day wont change the facts about your job, but it will change your internal environment and allow you to feel more satisfied and peaceful about your situation.Force yourself to think of a way in which this experience might benefit you.Sometimes it might seem like a situation or behavior is absolutely 100% bad. However, thats rarely the truth of the matter. In fact, most negative situations in the workplace can work for your good by giving you valuable experience that makes you better off in the end, or that trains you to avoid even worse situations in the future. For example, for about two years, I commuted three days a week for ninety minutes each way in traffic. After the first year, the commute really began to bother me. Ultimately I let that negative factor overwhelm the rest of my job and became bitter when the company wouldnt let me go full-time work from home.At the time I chose to be upset. However, now I can see that this was a valuable lesson that let me know I prefer a work-from-home environment and that privacy and quiet in the workplace are very important to me. This self-knowledge allows me to avoid job offers and situations that I know will make me uncomfortable on a day-to-day basis. If you have difficulty thinking of how an experience might benefit you, work with a close friend to reframe the situation for you. Describe the situation from your point of view, then ask, How do you think this experience might benefit me in the long run? You may be surprised by the insights your friend can offer.Screen your work friends for bad attitudes. Unfortunately, a bad attitude is catching. If you fall into the wrong crowd at work, you can easily get swept up into sarcasm, bitterness and general lack of excitement for the work you do. If you feel that your bad attitude is something youve acq uired from someone else, you need to make some changes. Try to catch yourself from engaging with negative behavior and talk and re-direct the conversation in more positive ways. Then try to get an influx of new energy by making new friends. Say hello or interact with someone new in your office every day. Go out to lunch with a different crowd, or invite a new person to go to lunch with your regular friends. You dont have to abandon your current work friends, but diluting a bad attitude with positivity goes a long way toward fixing it. If youre unhappy where you work, youre likely already looking for a new job. However, theres a chance that poor attitude will seep out in your titelblatt letter, resume and interview. Even worse, its going to have a negative effect on your day-to-day mood. Use these tips to improve your attitude and teach yourself that you can learn valuable things from any situation.

Because people want to be appreciated for what they do at work. But, unfortunately, most people dont feel appreciated at work.In fact, while 51 percent of managers surveyed across several companies felt they were doing a good job of recognizing employees for work well done, only 17 percent of the employees who worked for those managers felt appreciated by their supervisors. Thus, there was a wide discrepancy between how managers felt they were doing in providing recognition, and what their employees experienced.Authentic appreciation The foundation for a vibrant workplaceA vibrant workplace isnt a perfect, utopian organization that is without struggles or challenges. In fact, the vibrant workplace actually can exist in the same external conditions as a toxic workplace. But somehow, this particular culture has found ways to resist and repel negative influences, to train gruppe members to build healthy internal processes, and to continually put forth positive e nergy toward the organizations goals. How does all this happen?A healthy organization cant develop withoutauthentic appreciation a core component and driving force for a vibrant workplace to grow and prosper. 7 employee benefits your company needs to be truly LGBT inclusive

7 employee benefits your company needs to be truly LGBT inclusive7 employee benefits your company needs to be truly LGBT inclusiveWhile June celebratesPride Month, many companies offer benefits that support the LGBTQ+ community all year round (as they should). The positive impact these benefits make extends outside of the LGBTQ+ community, as inclusive policies are appealing toallworkers. One2017 Deloitte studysuggests that 80 percent of respondents said they look for employers that are inclusive - and 72 percent are willing to leave their current job if they find another company that is even mora inclusive.Follow Ladders on FlipboardFollow Ladders magazines on Flipboard covering Happiness, Productivity, Job Satisfaction, Neuroscience, and moreAs more companies today make conscious strides in their diversity and inclusion efforts, the following LGBTQ+ friendly benefits should absolutely be on their radar.1. Paid Parental Leave and Family-Building Benefits for AllThe United States is the only developed country in the world that doesnt mandate paid parental leave, according to aPew Research Center analysisof 41 countries. While other countries offer robust leave to their citizens - with Denmark offering a year of paid leave, France 16 weeks, Mexico 12 weeks, and Afghanistan 13 weeks - in the U.S., only five states and Washington D.C. mandate any kind of paid leave. For the LGBTQ+ community (and all couples, for that matter), having access to paid parental leave for both parents is crucial. While giving fathers leave levels a load of parenting responsibilities for heterosexual couples and encourages equality in the home, adequate paid parental leave for two fathers, for example, is just plain necessary to raise a family. An even better option for companies? Offering a yet-more inclusive paid caregiving leave, which better acknowledges the needs of caregivers outside of the traditional (and heteronormative) framework of biological families. Family building can tak e a variety of different forms. And all of those forms are deserving of support, be it through adoption assistance or family-building benefits like IVF (but more on that later).2. Paid Sick LeaveLike parental leave, the United States does not require paid family or sick leave on a national level, either. While the federal Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) requires eligible employers to provide unpaid family leave, there isnt a federal requirement for paid leave or sick days. So, as such, employees rely on voluntary employer policies, and many are forced to trade their vacation time for it.This is especially important for the LGBTQ+ community, which already faces discrimination when seeking health care. That many LGBTQ+ workers dont get time off when theyre sick is only compounded by the fact that, if they do get some time to seek out a doctor, theyll often face discriminatory treatment. In fact,56 percentof LGBTQ+ individuals have confronted discrimination while seeking medical tre atment, including the absence of proper gender designation on medical intake forms and the refusal to provide specific and necessary services. Specifically, one in four queer peoplehas reported experiencing some form of medical discrimination just in the last year.Another surveyby the National Center for Transgender Equality and the National Gay and Lesbian Task Force suggests that 19 percent of trans and gender non-conforming people have been refused care because of their identity. Which is likely why 28 percent of trans and gender non-conforming people have postponed medical care when sick or injured.Which all goes to say, the LGBTQ+ community may need more time finding a doctor who supports and acknowledges their identities - meaning they will need that paid time off to do so.3. Professional Development OpportunitiesOn-the-job development services are important for all employees. In fact, according to a 2008 survey byCatalyst, a group of high potential women who graduated from to p master of business administration programs worldwide were still paid $4,600 less in their first post-MBA jobs, occupied lower-level management positions and had significantly less career satisfaction than their male counterparts with the same education levels. And, when the Harvard Business School had analyzed the results of that study, the researchers found that the main difference between the high-performing women and men was the type of on-the-job development theyd received. For the LGBTQ+ community, career services are equally important. The community needs access to services that not only help them to progress in their careers but also to navigate topics likecoming out at the office, knowing their rights and the legal and moral obligations of their employers, transitioning in the workplace, networking with other LGBTQ+ peers, and more. To the latter end, creating an LGBTQ+employee resource groupif your company doesnt already have one is a great place to departure.4. Student Lo an Repayment ProgramAmericans are in debt, plain and simple. For example, more Americans face student loan debt than ever before, with millennials, in particular, owing a staggering sum of over $1.48 trillion spread out among about 44 million borrowers, according to2018 estimates. The LGBTQ+ community is especially impacted by this kind of debt. LGBTQ+ borrowers reportedly feel concerned about their education debt, for example, with more than half (60 percent) regretting the decision to take out student loans, according to a survey fromStudent Loan Hero. More than a quarter of LGBTQ+ student loan borrowers (28 percent) feel that their debt is unmanageable, which makes sense given that LGBTQ+ respondents have $112,607 in student loan debt, about $16,000 more than the general population average of $96,211.A student loan repayment program would, therefore, help everyone in debt but particularly the LGBTQ+ community.5. Reimbursement for Fertility TreatmentReimbursement for fertility trea tment is becoming an ever more popular benefit. In fact, over 400 United States-based companies offer benefits for fertility treatments, according to data collected byFertility IQ. For example, Starbucks offers part-time employees infertility coverage after just one month on the job. And other companies such as the Bank of America, Tesla and Spotify offer unlimited in vitro fertilization (IVF) coverage to their employee. Its an important and appealing benefit because IVF can be upwards of $20,000 in most major cities per cycle, according to research put out by FertilityIQ. And, as many same-sex couples turn to IVF to start and build their families, companies can financially support them through this process.6. Paid Volunteer TimeCustomer Relationship Management (CRM) platformSalesforceis known for offering its employees exceptional benefits, such as paid time off for volunteering, as well as up to $5,000 to put toward the charitable non-profit cause of their choice. This kind of benef it can help all employees contribute to a number of different LGBTQ+ causes and support the community in a variety of different ways - through both volunteered services and financial contributions.7. Retirement ProgramsAccording toStudent Loan Hero, LGBTQ+ borrowers are more likely than the general population to make less than $50,000 a year. And, furthermore, by the fact that almost one-third of LGBTQ+ respondents report being denied financial help.As such, the LGBTQ+ community is less prepared for retirement, according to the same Student Loan Hero survey. Only 47 percent of LGBTQ+ people have a retirement savings vehicle, compared to 56 percent of the general population. Thus, a retirement program is a hugely beneficial way employers can show support to all their talent, but particularly to LGBTQ+ employees who may have additional need for it.Dont miss out on articles like these.
